For a university and/or research institute as Wageningen UR, it is essential that appropriate experts can be found easily and fast. When a company or a journalist has a question or a query, it is highly desirable that the scientist who knows most about the subject, can be found without delay. We have done a pilot study to find the right expert within the expertise fields of water and chains, based on a query with a free text search term. The competence guide has two sides; on the one hand experts are to be identified with the help of a list of expertises, on the other hand there is the need to connect free text search terms with the corresponding expertise. For the first aspect we have assumed that scientists publish often, or regularly, in their own field of expertise. For this, fingerprint-technology offers the possibility to connect a list of expertises to every expert. For the second aspect we have formulated two ontologies (formal knowledge models), with which the most significant terms in the research fields water and chains are formulated. The search term as used by a journalist or company are searched in the ontology, this group of related ontology terms are compared with the fingerprints of the experts, and an ordered list of experts, with contact information and relevant expertises will be shown to the journalist or company.
